During the four weeks of Advent, Solemn Evening Prayer will be held on Sunday evenings at 4:45 pm. The Cathedral Cantors will lead the chanting of the Psalms in a solemn manner. On Sunday, December 21, Evening Prayer will be led by the Cathedral Choir, and feature chanted Psalms, and selections of Renaissance polyphony by Orlando di Lasso. Evening Prayer will last about 25 minutes and is a wonderful way to enter into this holy season of Advent.
Evening Prayer comes from the Liturgy of the Hours, otherwise known as the Divine Office, and contains prayers centered on the Book of Psalms, readings from the New Testament, and a hymn in honor of the Blessed Mother. While priests are obliged to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, the Church actually encourages all lay people to pray it as well. This is why the Liturgy of the Hours is referred to as the "prayer of the Church for the Church."
