The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered to all those in the Cathedral Parish who are shut-ins during the months of June and December every year. Sister Sharon Bongiorno, our Visitation Coordinator, schedules the anointings with one of our priests.
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is also available in the Cathedral Church every Februrary 11th which is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Anointing is available at other times as requested. IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY, SERIOUS ACCIDENT OR PENDING DEATH, CONTACT THE PARISH OFFICE IMMEDIATELY 509-358-4290 AND PRESS #4 TO REACH A PRIEST.
The anointing of the sick conveys several graces and imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety, discouragement, and temptation, and conveys peace and fortitude (CCC 1520). It is a sacrament that has the power to heal those who are preparing for surgery, advanced in age or seriously ill. It also prepares one's soul to meet God at the time of death.
These graces flow from the atoning death of Jesus Christ, for "this was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, ‘He took our infirmities and bore our diseases’" (Matt. 8:17).
